Collections

Collections are tags for your recipes. Use them to group recipes by meal type, season, mood, or anything else: Favorites, Breakfast, Want to try, 30-Minute Dinners, Holiday Baking. A recipe can belong to as many collections as you want.

Collections are free for everyone, with no cap on how many you can create.

Collections vs. Meal Kits

Both organize recipes, but they do different jobs:

  • Collections are tags. They never combine ingredients, never produce a shopping list, and don't carry servings or quantities. They're for browsing.
  • Meal Kits are meal plans. They combine ingredients across recipes into a single shopping list and let you tweak servings per recipe. See Meal Kits.

If you're trying to remember "where do I keep my pasta recipes?", that's a collection. If you're planning what to eat this week, that's a Meal Kit.

Create or rename a collection

Open Profile → Collections. Type a name in the Create new collection row and tap the checkmark, or pick one from the Suggested Collections list (Favorites, Want to try, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, Snacks, Drinks). Tap the pencil icon next to a collection to rename it.

Add a recipe to a collection

From any recipe's detail screen, open the ... menu and expand Collections. Tap a collection to add or remove the recipe; changes save right away and a checkmark shows which collections it's in. Tap New Collection to create one with the recipe already in it.

Browse the library by collection

On a phone, tap the tag icon in the Recipes header to switch the library between a flat list of all recipes and a view grouped by collection. Your choice is remembered the next time you open the app.

On a tablet or in a wide browser window, Collections is its own item in the sidebar, just below Recipes, so you can jump straight to it without changing how the Recipes list looks.

Either way, the grouped view shows one card per collection (just like the Meal Kits tab), ending with a No collection group that gathers every recipe you haven't tagged yet. Tap a collection's card to open a list of just its recipes, where the filter and add buttons keep working.

If you don't have any collections yet, the grouped view offers a shortcut to the management screen so you can create your first one.

Organize with Chef

Once you have at least one collection, an Organize with Chef button appears at the top of the collections list whenever some recipes aren't in any collection yet. Tap it and Chef reads each of those recipes and adds it to every collection it clearly fits. A big library can take a few seconds; the button shows Organizing… while it works.

Chef only uses collections that describe the recipe itself, like Breakfast, Soups, or Vegetarian. It never adds recipes to personal collections like Favorites or Want to try, and it leaves a recipe alone when nothing fits, so you can file those by hand. Everything it adds can be changed from the recipe's Add to Collections screen.

You can also ask Chef to organize your recipes in a chat, and it reports what it filed when it's done. See Chef.

The button isn't shown when you have no collections or every recipe is already in one.

Delete a collection

In Profile → Collections, tap the trash icon next to a collection. The collection is removed but your recipes are not deleted; they just lose that tag.
