Assistant
The Assistant tab is a kitchen companion powered by AI, built into Magic Meal Kit. Ask it for weeknight ideas, swap an ingredient on a recipe you've already saved, build a meal plan from your library, or kick off a grocery list for your next Box, all in plain language.
Assistant is a Pro feature. Free accounts see an upgrade prompt when they open the tab.
Start a conversation
Open the Assistant tab and either tap one of the suggested prompts to start, or type your own message in the composer at the bottom and tap the send arrow.
The empty state offers a few jumping-off points:
- Suggest three easy weeknight dinners
- Build a meal plan from what I already have saved
- Swap the chicken in my last recipe for tofu
- Create a grocery list for my next box
Ask for anything else you'd ask a thoughtful friend who knows your library.
Attach an image
Tap the picture icon in the composer to attach a photo or screenshot. A thumbnail appears next to your draft so you can confirm the right image is attached, or tap the small × to remove it. When you send a message with an image, the Assistant can read it directly: take a photo of a printed recipe card, screenshot a recipe from another app, or share a picture of what's in your fridge and ask for ideas. As with any other action, the Assistant summarizes what it sees and asks you to confirm before saving anything to your library.
While the Assistant is responding
While a response is streaming, the send arrow turns into a stop button. Tap it to halt the current response cleanly. The conversation stays put — you can follow up with a new message or regenerate the answer.
Regenerate the last response
If the Assistant's reply isn't quite right, tap Regenerate beneath the most recent response to ask the model to try again. The Assistant uses the same prompt (and any attached image) and produces a fresh answer, replacing the previous one.
What it can do
The Assistant has access to your Magic Meal Kit account and can:
- Browse and search your recipes, Boxes, and collections.
- Suggest recipes that fit what you have, what's quick, or what matches your preferences.
- Import a recipe from a URL, suggest substitutions, or rewrite a recipe in a different style.
- Build a new Box, add or remove recipes from a Box, and adjust per-recipe servings.
- Generate a combined shopping list for a Box.
- Read or update your dietary preferences and allergies.
Before doing anything that changes your library, the Assistant summarizes what it's about to do and asks you to confirm.
Dietary preferences and allergies
If you've recorded any dietary preferences or allergies, a banner at the top of the Assistant reminds you to double-check ingredients against them before cooking. AI suggestions can occasionally miss something. The Assistant itself is also told about your restrictions and is asked to honor them in every suggestion, but the banner is your safety net.
If you change your preferences in Profile → Preferences, the Assistant picks up the new context on its next message.
Conversations
The Assistant doesn't keep a long-term history. Each chat lives in the current app session and starts fresh the next time you fully close and reopen the app. Conversations don't sync between devices.
For something you'll want to come back to, like a meal plan you're refining, ask the Assistant to save it as a Box. That lives in your library permanently.
Outside the app
If you'd rather chat with the assistant of your choice (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, and others), Magic Meal Kit also exposes a Model Context Protocol server you can connect to from those tools. The in-app Assistant and the MCP server work against the same data, so changes you make in one show up in the other.
